Reducing meat consumption is more important than ever to address some of the world’s most critical problems: the global burden of chronically preventable diseases, the overuse of valuable land and water resources, and the accelerating climate change that threatens the future of our planet.
The Global Meatless Monday Movement is one of the earliest and leading voices in advocating and allocating resources to help reduce meat consumption. Since its launch in 2003 by The Monday Campaigns and the Johns Hopkins Center for a Future Worth Living (CLF), the movement has taken root in over 40 countries and now includes meat-free Monday, green Monday and variations in 22 different languages.
The Monday Campaigns, Center For A Future Worth Living, and Communication Programs Center at Johns Hopkins have teamed up to create The Meatless Monday global platform for organizations to connect, share and work together to grow the number of people who consume less meat for their health and the health of the planet. The project is part of a broader initiative to reduce global meat consumption by expanding the evidence base describing the benefits of reducing high meat consumption, engaging key global stakeholders in the practice, and producing communication materials to enable groups to: Meatless Monday and other programs that reduce meat consumption.
The online community allows members to create organizational and individual profiles, participate in special groups, contribute to news feeds, join forums, and easily send messages to others in the community. Groups are organized according to regions, subject areas, areas of activity and types of organization in order to facilitate contact with like-minded people for members. As our community grows, we hope members will identify additional common interests in order to start new groups.
The main resource center contains research reports from Johns Hopkins as well as a selection of Meatless Monday creative materials and implementation guides that organizations can use to start a program. The intent is for these resources to provide a starting point and for other community members to add their ideas, research, and other resources to expand Meatless Monday and other meat reduction strategies around the world.
