Even if cannabis is legalized in most places, there are situations when consuming cannabis can be an obstacle in your life. Legalization can mean that you cannot be punished for recreational use. However, if you have cannabis in your system when you go to work, you may not be able to keep your job. Some of the following industries have extremely strict standards for the substances a worker can have on shifts.
The transportation industry demands that drivers are in good shape to drive. For example, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires employers to conduct drug tests on their employees while they are hired. You will also need to do random drug tests. While this appears to be an invasion of the driver’s privacy, it is for their own safety and the safety of others. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers’ ability to drive safely may be compromised if drivers are allowed to operate vehicles while under the influence of drugs. Drugs can cause eyesight to become blurred, unreliable, and much worse. Even drugs that do not have serious side effects can cause the driver to become overly relaxed. Driving a long shift can lead to drowsiness and, ultimately, a fatal accident.
Healthcare workers may not drive dangerous vehicles, but it is still important to be drug-free at work. Imagine how awful it would be to receive treatment from a doctor or nurse who was drunk or high! According to Lucy S. McAllister, nurses who fail a drug test are usually reported to their state nursing department. Depending on the seriousness of their crime, their license could be revoked. In most hospitals and medical practices, employees must undergo drug testing when using them. Some also require random drug tests.
Production facilities are full of heavy machinery. These powerful machines spin and move and have high speeds and can be very dangerous. It is therefore very important that all manufacturing workers are vigilant and able to operate the machines. If not, they can injure themselves or others or die. Because of this, according to EHS Today, most plants need a drug test before being discontinued. Some will do regular and random drug tests to make sure none of their employees have high jobs. In the event of an accident, you can bet that a drug test will be done to see if the accident was influenced by drugs.
Regardless of your personal opinion about the effects of cannabis, you may want to avoid it before you go to work. If you have any of these in your system, you will fail a drug test. Only use if you are sure that any remains of the medicine are removed from your system before you show up for work.
